Speaking About Wounds

I’m excited to announce that Sunday, July 14 I will be speaking at Highlands Presbyterian Church in Cheyenne. I’ve titled my talk, “Moving From the Wound Towards a Religious Vitality,” and I will draw on my childhood experiences as a strict Seventh-day Adventist to examine how religions can wound, and also how they can play a vital role in our world.

I was honored when they reached out to me about the possibility of speaking. When I asked if they wanted to hear about my life on the ranch or about growing up and leaving the Seventh-day Adventist church, they said they wanted to hear about my relationship to the Adventist church. It takes courage to invite someone you know who has had a bitter religious experience to speak to your religious organization.

Highlands Presbyterian Church is a progressive community committed to including all of God’s children, as they say on their website. They have a number of wonderful missions, including a partnership with the Metropolitan Denver-North Islamic Center helping to Afghan refugees settle in the United States.

If you are interested in hearing me speak, you can attend either in person in Cheyenne or over zoom at 10 AM MT on Sunday, July 14.
